How to Hook Up Xbox Live Through Your Laptop

An Easy Step-by-step Guide

I. Introduction

Hello, and welcome to my guide on how to use your laptop as a wireless network adapter for Xbox Live. As many of you know, the Xbox must be hooked up to the Internet in order to get Live. Unfortunately, if there is no modem near your Xbox's location, you need to spend the extra $100 to buy a wireless network adapter. This can be a very large problem, as the cost stops most kids from getting it. The thing is, they don't tell you that you don't need this expensive accessory (as long as you have an internet receiving laptop). I am going to show you how to use your laptop in place of the wireless network adapter, so you don't need to spend your money! I hope this guide will help you out!

II. Steps

1. You must make sure your laptop receives a stable internet connection.

2. Get an Ethernet cable (bought very cheaply at Wal-Mart). Ethernet cables are the same cables that go directly from your modem to your router.

3. First, you need to plug the cable in the back of the Xbox, and the back or side of the computer (it should be very obvious where it goes in, it is shaped like the end of the cable.)

4. Now, hit Start, and on the right, there should be something that says "Connect To", click on that to connect to your router.

5. Right click the internet you are connected to (make sure that it is on), and hit Status.

6. Under the category Activity, click Properties.

7. You are under the tab of Networking, hit Sharing

8. Check the first box, and if the second one isn't checked, check it.

9. Close out of everything

10. In the bottom right hand corner of the screen, there should be an icon featuring two monitors. Right click it and hit Diagnose and Repair. After you make sure that it says there are no problems, exit out.

11. In the bottom right hand corner of the screen, there should be an icon featuring two monitors. Right click it and hit Diagnose and Repair. After you make sure that it says there are no problems, exit out.

12. Enjoy your free Xbox Live connection (must still pay for subscription)

III. Trouble Shooting

1. If you repeatedly get a connection error, try the following:

1. Restart your computer

2. Restart the Xbox and unhook the Ethernet Cord

3. Go to your modem and router, unplug both, and wait twenty seconds. Then, plug everything back in and try again

I hope that this guide helped you! Thank you for reading.

When I was trying to figure this out, I ran into a problem that took me 3 hours to figure out. My x box just could NOT connect to x box live no matter what. #1. after you click shared, go back and look at the IP address on your wireless network, under IPv4 DNS server. Make sure that its the same IP address found under the DNS server on your local area network. If not, change it. #2, MAKE SURE YOUR FIREWALL IS TURNED OFF! I had to turn off my firewall because it still wouldn't connect.
