How to Host a 5K Run/Walk

Reba M
Hosting a 5K run/walk for a charity fund-raiser or to increase awareness of a good cause can be daunting task, but by breaking it into smaller tasks it can be easily completed. Some of the things that need to be completed before the 5K event include; location, advertisement, T-shirts, prizes, entry fees, sanctioning and advertisement.

First, the location, date, and time of the event needs to be determined before anything else can be completed. The event needs to be held in a central easily accessible location. Permission to hold the event in the desired location needs to be received from the proper authorities. The date and time of the event should attempt to not conflict with other large events. Prior to the event the course should be clearly marked out and explained to the participants.

The entry fee of the event should be determined and should not be great but should be reasonable in order to get a large turn out. The cost of the event should be relieved through the donation of the prizes, water, advertising costs, t-shirt costs and other expenses. People should be encouraged to donate directly to the cause if they choose not to run or walk the race.

The event should be advertised in numerous ways in order to reach the greatest number of possible participants and those people who are willing to donate directly to the cause. The possible ways of advertising the event include local newspapers, radio, filers around town, through word of mouth, and through an event page on facebook or other networking sites. By talking directly or sending invites to the events to athletic groups and club teams at the local college or university the number of participants at the event can be increases if they choose to compete and the event will be easily advertised and promoted in a different manner.

Finally, having the race sanctioned as a qualifier for a large regional race is a great option that will increase the number of participants and the publicity for the event with little extra effort. Additionally, because of the guidelines that qualifying races are required to follow will help guide the organization of the event. The large event can also lend support and additional guidance when questions or concerns come up during the planning of the event.

Even if the event does not have the desired the turn out the first time it is held, it can be a learning experience and will race some money and awareness for the desired cause. Additionally, it will help guide the planning of the second annual 5K run/walk.

Basic info not really telling me anything I didn't think of in less time than it would have taken to write the column myself. Also, if I would have written it myself, there wouldn't be so many spelling errors. So many it's distracting. Next site...
