Step #1 - Create a Guest List
It really is not practical to just throw a prom for one or two kids. This means that you will want to invite kids from other homeschools in your area, as well as students that your kids are friends with to your prom. If you need help finding kids to come to your homeschool prom contact your local homeschool cooperative.
Step #2 - Create a Theme
Like a traditional prom a homeschool prom needs to have a theme. However, since you have complete control over the educational concepts that are presented to your kids you can focus on religious themes or morality themes for your prom. These themes will help you to select decorations and activities.
Step #3 - Set the Rules for the Homeschool Prom
It is important to have a list of rules for your homeschool prom before you send out invitations. The rules can address things like what is appropriate to wear to your homeschool prom, i.e. modesty wear, how long the prom will last and what appropriate behavior will be. These rules will need to accompany the invitations.
Step #4 - Outline the Basic Information for Your Homeschool Prom
The next step is to outline the basic components for your homeschool prom. This will include when the prom will be held, where it will be held, how long it will last, if chaperones will be required, how many people will be allowed, if a fee will be charged and what types of activities will be offered. If you don't believe in dancing then you will need to come up with alternative activities for your guests such as wholesome games.
Step #5 - Send Out Invitations
Step five is to send out your invitations. Make sure you request an RSVP by a certain date so you know how much food to buy.
Step #6 - Buy Your Supplies
As you approach the date of your homeschool prom you will want to start picking up supplies. Try to buy things on sale so you can save money. You can buy most non-perishable items well in advance of the prom, but you will want to hold off on buying refreshments until the week of the prom.
Step #7 - Have the Prom
The prom itself will need to be adequately chaperoned by parents and it will need to be well organized. Create a schedule of activities, announcements and other events. Make sure you circulate during the prom to make sure everyone is having a good time.
