Guests: Invite three or four families to the party. The families should include the moms who are the guests of honor. You should also include the spouse of each mom if they are married and all of their children. This does result in a larger group than many traditional Mother's Day parties have. This means the preparation should be well thought out.
Food: Find out the favorite dishes of each of the moms that will be attending and prepare these items as the main dishes for a buffet dinner. Everyone should be involved in preparing the meal for Mother's Day other than the moms themselves. The side dishes should be a variety of items that the mom's enjoy. Keep in mind that considering everyone should help prepare the meal there should be some sides chosen that the younger children can assist with. Some suggestions could include items such as a salad.
Entertainment: Have competitions for the guests of the party, with the moms at the party serving as the audience. Have the youngest children create poems about their moms. Read the poems anonymously without the moms knowing who wrote which poem. Give each mom that can guess which poem that is written by their child a prize. For older children, add a little humor into the competition. See who can compile a simple list of chores such as folding laundry, clearing a table, and making a bed the fastest. Give the mom of the child who does the tasks the fastest a prize to celebrate the fact that they have taught their child best. Other possible contests including having games where which children know their mom the best. This can be done in a method similar to the dating game. Each child or group of children has to answer questions that match the same answers their mom provides. Whoever gets the most answers correct results in their mom winning a gift certificate for a dinner out for the entire family.
This is a non-traditional Mother's Day party, but one that allows several families to get together and celebrate Mother's Day at the same time. This is great if you have families in the same neighborhood that socialize frequently. It can also be great for extended families where each of the families have children close to the same age range. Don't forget though, the whole purpose of Mother's Day parties are to celebrate the woman you call mom or the mom of your children.
