Food
Little girls don't usually eat fancy food or tea sandwiches. Make basic sandwiches like peanut butter and jelly, egg salad or ham and cut them into fancy shapes. Find cookie cutters in the shape of tea pots, tea cups, crowns, or other items that fit the theme of your party. Kids will love the decorative touch and they are an easy size for eating.
Serve simple desserts, or allow the girls to make their own dessert. Cookies and cupcakes are always favorites with kids. They can be simply topped with a candy in the shape of a flower, princess crown or other appropriate theme. If candies are not available look in the cake decorating section of your favorite craft store or grocery store for princess sprinkles or other cake decorating supplies. These stores carry a larger assortment of decorations that then they used to.
If you'd like to give the girls a project to do, they can decorate cookies or cupcakes themselves. Have the cookies or cupcakes baked, then give the girls frosting and decorations and let them go. Be sure to put down paper or plastic before you do this to make for easy clean up.
Tea
Most little girls don't really like to drink tea, but they love to have tea parties. Trying to serve them tea will probably result in turned up noses and exclaims of "Ewwww, gross!" Serve pink lemonade, juice, or hot chocolate in tea cups and your little girls will be far more excited than if they actually drank tea.
Projects or games
If you don't want to deal with the sugar high or mess of the cupcake or cookie decorating, there are many other things the girls can do that are inexpensive but appeal to their fun side.
Most craft stores have craft kits that will make at least six projects, and sometimes up to twenty or thirty projects. Most times these kits include everything you need so you don't have to hunt for additional supplies.
Coloring pages or coloring books are inexpensive and easy to prepare. A quick Internet search of tea party coloring pages will yield more results than you can print. If you want to focus on princesses, you will find an abundance of results as well.
Picking up tea party books from your library and reading to the girls is free and entertaining.
Clothes
It's up to you how fancy you want the guests to dress, but be sure to specify the "dress code" on the invitation. Little girls get their feelings hurt easily. You can have the girls come dressed in their best or if your little girl is like most, you have a vast array of dress up clothes in your home. You can have the girls dress up when they arrive at your house. If you're not sure that you have enough clothing for everyone, check rummage sales and thrift stores for old bridesmaid dresses or prom dresses. You don't have to worry about damage and little girls love these "grown up" dresses, even if we want to discard them. Fancy hats are always a hit as well.
It doesn't have to take a lot of effort, or money, to throw a great party for your sweetheart. Enjoy the day and be a little girl again yourself. It will give you an excuse to drink hot chocolate and eat cookies.
