How to Host a Toga Party

Toga parties are a great theme party idea for the warm summer months. They are simple to put together because not much is required in the way of food and decorations. Use a Greek theme throughout to make it feel authentic.

Food choices can be kept quite simple. Fruit and veggie platters can be bought at the grocery store or you can simply buy your own and cut them up. Greeks often have a lot of fruits and vegetables at their parties so this fits perfectly. Make a salad bar with Greek lettuce, tomatoes, olives, and feta cheese. Serve sparkling grape juice or wine. Not only is this food easy to put together, it will also be much cheaper than most party food.

Greenery and foliage makes perfect decorates for the party. Get some from your florist or trim your bushes and trees right before the party. Twist them around any places you see fit. Plastic fruit is another cheap decoration that can also be used to make centerpieces.

For a great toga party game, buy a lot of grapes and a bucket that is big enough for feet to fit inside. Have guests take turns smashing grapes with their feet in the bucket. Give them two minutes and see who can make the most juice in the allotted amount of time.

Another fun idea is to have a best toga contest. Have both a men's and women's competition and judge them based on looks and creativity.

Now that you are prepared for your guests, it's time to work on your own toga. Buy four or five yards of rectangular fabric. An old bed sheet can also be used. White is traditional but any solid color will work. Use a sharp pair of scissors to cut the material into a semi-circle. Make ΒΌ" cut at the top center of the semi-circle. Consider hemming the edges, but this is not necessary. Secure one corner of the semi-circle to the waist on the right side of the body and use a large safety pin to attach it on the left side of the body. The fabric will hang down to your knees. The rest of the fabric should be thrown over your left shoulder and fastened with a safety pin. Tuck the loose end into the back of the toga.

Now for the fun part. Consider using decorative pins instead of safety pins to add some pizzazz. Find a piece of rope with tassels on the end at the fabric store to tie around your waist. Find wire with leaves attached at a craft or fabric store and wrap it in a circle to place on top of your head.

Enjoy the party!
