Here are some tips and tricks for hosting a successful vampire Halloween event.
Vampire Invitations
Set the mood with your invitations, whether you're sending them online or in the mail. Vampires are known for doing things the old-fashioned way-so they might prefer to send snail mail.
Consider using a wax seal on an inner envelope (don't use it on the main envelope as it will become damaged in the mail). Use a calligraphic font to set the mood-and don't forget to mention that it's a vampire party so everyone is aware of the theme.
Dress the Part
As the host, you'll be expected to dress the part. Guests might also come to you asking where they might find the latest attire. Compile a list of links and information for inquisitive guests and set the bar high with your own costume.
If guests don't want to dress up as vampires, perhaps they'll consider coming as other supernatural beings appearing in "Twilight" and "True Blood" such as werewolves. Guests wanting to take a more human approach might consider dressing as a Merlotte's waitress or as Bella.
If you're dressing as a vampire, don't forget to apply your makeup appropriately.
Mind the Fangs
Many party hosts provide plastic cups and permanent markers. Guests use the markers to write their names on the cups so they don't lose track of which drink belongs to them. Even if you're pulling out the fancy wine glasses for your vampire party, you may still wish to provide the markers and cups. Nearly everyone at a vampire party will be wearing prosthetic fangs of some sort.
When it comes time to eat or get into a serious conversation (or when guests simply get bored or irritated wearing them), guests will require a temporary container for their teeth. To be clear, provide the cups and markers with a sign reading "stash your fangs here" near the food area.
You can also opt to use identifiable glass garters to keep things classy.
Vampire Party Food - and Drink!
Vampires love drinking blood. You can simulate blood with red wine and Shirley Temples. Humane vampires looking to mainstream will kindly prefer Tru Blood - in bottles, of course.
Apples are always a seasonal favorite for "Twilight" fans, and they provide a healthy alternative amidst all that Halloween candy. Check out this article for more specific ideas on vampire foods.
Digital Downloads
A party isn't a party without theme music. If you're going for a more traditional, Victorian vampire atmosphere (a la "Dracula"), consider classical music for the background.
For more discerning fans, you can download music from "True Blood" and "Twilight" via iTunes.
If you have some talented and outgoing guests, consider setting up a karaoke machine (or even "Rock Band") and ask them to perform.
In addition to these details, don't forget about general ambiance. Dim the lighting, make things a bit formal and don't forget candlelight. Swap out cheesy Halloween decorations for hand-crafted mini-coffins and play some vampire trivia.
