Tips and Advice for How to Hunt Deer

J. Motes
Deer hunting is one of the most popular outdoor activities in the United States. In many areas of the country buck season is a reverently observed holiday. Family members drive home to little country towns from all over the country. Kids (teachers and other school personnel) skip school. Adults come down with mysterious illnesses that cause them to miss work. My Dad even worked at a factory that stopped production the first week of deer season. Some people with domineering bosses even quit their jobs to hit the woods. Wives become 'deer season widows' for a time, only seeing their husbands an hour or so each night or not at all if they have a cabin to spend the night. This, my friends, is a serious event in which you should be involved.

This article will provide you with the basic information on how to hunt deer!

You need only a few things: a place to hunt, a gun or bow, and a knife. Of course the government gets involved and requires a hunting license (with some exceptions) and you will probably need blaze orange clothing to follow regulations. For more information on licenses and other requirements visit you states website.

As far as a place to hunt if you don't own land or know land where you are welcome to hunt, then you will need to find public land to hunt. States have different systems but most have publicly owned hunting areas or arrangements with private landowners to allow hunting by the public. Other sources of hunting lands available are leasing land, private fee charging hunting clubs, and large landowners. Companies involved in such businesses as timber, coal, and agriculture often have programs to allow hunting. Call large landowning companies or check their websites. National Forests allow hunting in many areas as well as state forests and some state parks. If you check around you are sure to find land to hunt on near you.

Check regulations for your area for minimums on guns and bow for deer hunting. Rifles should be at least the power of a .243 Winchester / 6mm Remington for hunting. Common calibers for deer hunting include the 30-30 Winchester, .308, .270 Winchester, and 30-06 Springfield. Magnum calibers are all the rage but are overkill for most deer hunting purposes.

Knives are another area where most deer hunters go overboard. A sturdy folding knife with a 3-4 inch blade is sufficient for most deer hunting. A small hatchet or axe is handy for breaking bone, but isn't a necessity.

Read websites, magazines, and books about deer hunting for more information on how to hunt deer. The best way is to find a mentor. And follow the two key rules of hunting: be safe and have fun.
