A few years ago my husband and I moved into an older home that required a lot of work. Nothing structurally was wrong with it, it just needed some help in the looks department. I didn't want to just throw things together and hope it turned out well, so I went on a hunt to find the best possible solutions for how I planned to decorate, which included painting the walls, hanging the pictures, and placement of furniture and odds and ends.
The first place I went was the library. I checked out at least fifty books on decorating, self help home manuals, and craft ideas. I looked through all the pictures and found several I liked, a few I loved, and some that I thought would look nice with some changes. I got my trusty camera out and took pictures of the photos I liked, downloaded them to my computer, and was able to pick and choose the color schemes, layouts, and designs I liked best. I found many pieces of artwork that I could make myself in the art books, and put those aside in a different folder for projects to make later for a specific room.
I made a special trip to the home improvement aisle at the library and looked through books that bragged of being able to make the most of small spaces, large spaces, odd spaces, or outdoor spaces. These particularly were helpful to me even in rooms of average size because it allowed me to be creative with the space I did have, and give me options I may not have considered before.
The second stop I made was a search on the internet. I did a search on Google for key words like "design," "home improvement," "paint techniques," "home improvement," "art projects," "color combinations," and "home decorating." Though I found many, many useful sites, I was disappointed at the amount of images I was able to find. I was still able to find great ideas to add to my list, so it wasn't a waste of time.
Third, I browsed the magazine aisle at the local bookstore. The idea was to save money, so I knew I wouldn't be buying many magazines if any at all, but wanted to make sure the ones I did buy had the content I wanted in them. I got several ideas I stored in my head, and then wrote down once I got in the car, and found two magazines with pictures that I really loved throughout, so I purchased those to have the images easily on hand.
Last, I went to the thrift store closest to my home and browsed the old magazines and books they offered for sale. I found several I liked and spent less on three times as many magazines as I did on the two I had bought at the bookstore.
After I had my collection, I sat and put ideas together. Red walls in the hallway with my vanity in the middle, a lovely montage of pictures and dried flowers hanging from the wall: ideas that I got from putting three different images I had found in the books and magazines together that I would not have otherwise come up with easily on my own. I decorated my entire house in this way and I was more than thrilled with the turn out.
