How to Identify a Character

Techniques used by the author to convey information about a character:
• direct exposition (what is said about the character)
• character's actions (what the character does)
• character's thoughts (what the character thinks)
• as viewed by other characters (what other characters say)

Types of characters:
• dynamic or round character (character undergoes important change)
• flat or static character (character remains constant)
• caricature (a type of flat or static character)
• stereotype (a type of flat or static character)

Round or Dynamic character : A round character is a character in fiction who encounters conflict and is changed by it. Round characters tend to be more fully developed and described than flat, or minor characters.

Flat character or Static character : Flat characters are minor characters in fiction who do not undergo substantial emotional change or growth. Flat characters are also referred to as "two-dimensional characters".

Caricature : A representation of someone in which his or her distinguishing features are exaggerated for comic or satiric effect ; a grotesque misrepresentation.

Stereotype: A stereotype is a person or thing that conforms to a fixed idea or type.
