How to Identify a Living Situation in Crisis

Daniel J Stelter
American society, when properly analyzed, is easily identified as one being in total chaos. This is not only true in America, but almost all nations around the world as a whole. While this may at first seem to be an outrageous claim, it is in fact not that outrageous at all. However, the point of this article is to help people identify what would qualify as a "crisis" situation in their own personal lives, as it relates to anxiety. Many people, including the anxious, live in crisis states for the entire duration of their lives without even being aware of it.

A crisis state is one where a person must seek professional help immediately. Many persons, after taking some time to get back in a healthy place, will find that they were living with multiple crises at the same time.

So, what are some situations that would qualify as crises for anxiety sufferers? A major one is suicide. Many years' worth of anxiety and social isolation can and will drive people to the point of seriously contemplating suicide. If one seriously is thinking of thoughts of suicide or harming one's self in any way, it is advisable to call a local suicide hotline, the city or county department of human services, a pastor, or any other friend immediately! No one who is doing well in life even remotely considers suicide as a possible solution to his or her difficulties.

Female anxiety sufferers (and women in general), can fall into the trap of an abusive relationship. Determining which relationships are abusive is difficult for those who are in them, and is an art form all in itself. The quick answer is that abusive relationships can be either emotionally and physically abusive. Any physical abuse whatsoever, even if it is one occurrence, is intolerable and will only escalate if it is not addressed immediately. Emotional abuse is more difficult to identify, but a few forms of it include the controlling boyfriend who will not let his girlfriend do anything without his permission, the critical boyfriend who constantly puts his girlfriend down for doing "stupid" things, and the manipulative boyfriend who will make his girlfriend choose between her job, friends, or family and her relationship with her boyfriend. Women stay in these relationships because they have low self esteem, and those that are affected by anxiety disorders make up a good portion of those with low self esteem.

Another crisis state where help should be sought immediately is if one is unable to perform the basic necessities of life such as working, going to school, driving, talking on the phone, or getting outside of the house. An anxious person that is functional in these areas (i.e. can perform these tasks, but with some noticeable anxiety) is not in a crisis state, but those who cannot perform these basic tasks most definitely are and should seek help immediately.

The final crisis for which the anxious person should be on guard is addiction. Alcoholism and drug abuse, among many other addictions, are commonplace among those severely afflicted by anxiety. While the addiction itself may not be causing extensive harm at the moment (for example, the alcoholic who only is drunk once per week, or the drug addict who only smokes at weekend parties), an addiction can, and if untreated, eventually will cause extensive harm in one's life, to the point where the only activity one engages in is the addiction.

This guide is by no means comprehensive, but it does do an excellent job of identifying a few basic crisis states that may be occurring in one's life. If the reader of this article recognizes that one or more (a common occurrence) of these crises are present in one's life, he or she must seek help immediately without delay. Contact a suicide hotline, call the city or county department of social services, or call a trusted religious figure, family member, or friend and catch the problem while it is a spark, not later on when it is a wildfire.

Good luck to the readers of this article as they continue to make the changes they need to lead a healthier and happier lifestyle!A crisis situation may not always be obvious to many people.Seek help immediately if you are experiencing a crisis situation
