How to Ignore the 'How To Guides'

Nicolette
In our time, we have so many people telling us how to do things. Yes, this is a good thing, for it spreads ideas and often helps those searching for advice in specific areas. How -to's are heaven sent for those of us (like myself) who can't cook to save our lives, who need to learn how to operate their computer, fix something, or create something. But what happens when we get to the point of running to How -to guides whenever we are presented with a problem? This is when we have a problem.

We have gotten to the point where everytime we find something to be slightly difficult, we run to someone to tell us the easy way to do it. There are even "experts" telling parents How to Control Your Kids, How to Get Your Child to Listen, Etc. How can anyone tell you HOW TO deal with your kids when they don't know you or your kids. All children have their own special personalities that make them different, that make them unique. Is it really possible for someone to be able to tell you what WILL work when your child is upset and taking it out on their siblings? They might say that your child has a disciplinary problem when in truth, you the parent might know that your child is just having a bad day, or maybe your child had a fight with his ir her best friend. How is the expert going to know that? This is one of those times when it's important to know How to Ignore the How To's because you have to know that you can't raise your child from a book.

What happens when these How to Guides begin to hinder our childrens and even our own creativity? Instead of running to a how to manual, try to figure it out yourself. Haven't you ever been proud of yourself when you fixed the car by yourself, or painted the kitchen, or fixed your family a dinner that you came up with on your own? Don't you want your kids to experience that joy?

Yes, there is a time to go to that How Tobook, but you also have to realize that you are capable of far more than you think. Give yourself a chance and just ignore the How to be a Good Parent when you can only learn certain things by experience or trial and error. Good Luck!
