How to Impress Your Date While Keeping the Budget Recession-friendly

Great Cheap Date Ideas

You need not spend any more than $20 or $30 to have a successful, fun, and exciting first date -- or a date with a long-term partner. Here are my top three:

1. The museum.

If you live in New York, go to the American Museum of Natural History and watch an IMAX movie. Or go to the Metropolitan Museum of Art -- the admission fee is "suggested donation only" -- meaning even though they suggest $15 or $20 a person, you can give them just a nickel (or nothing at all!) and they'll let both of you in. A great value for an afternoon of looking at priceless artwork. Art museums in other cities offer similar pricing schemes.

2. Public transportation (yes, really).

Take a weekend getaway on the bus to a local casino or hotel. Half the fun is the travel. Also consider Amtrak trainfare; if you book in advance, it isn't too pricey, and you can take advantage of amazing scenery and an on-board cafe with food and alcoholic drinks on the way there.

3. Wine tastings.

Walk into your local wine store and ask if they have any tastings coming up. These events are frequently free, and they are a great way to get cultural over the weekend. Impress your date with your cosmopolitan interest in fine wines, and get buzzed while you're at it (without paying a dime).

  • Three excellent ways to go on a date for cheap.
  • Consider public transportation as a getaway, too.
  • Wine tastings are great cultural events, and are often entirely free.
