I've met quite a few women who were more into sports than I am. They are not who this article is meant for. It's meant for the women who aren't very into sports, and who are dating and trying to develop a relationship with a guy who is.
While this article is not meant to be taken too seriously, there are some strategies that will help ensure that your man shares his joy of sports with you. Follow these simple guidelines and you'll show your guy that you understand his hobby and his infatuation with it.
Know what you know and what you don't
Nothing will piss us guys off more than someone (a man or a woman) who pretends to know something about sports when we're watching a game. Guess what... if you're pretending, we'll find out really quickly. Sports are like a religion to us. We can tell you what Mark Grace batted in 1990, even though we can't remember your birthday or the anniversary of our first date. It's just our God-given ability.
So, pretending will just piss us guys off. Don't tell us that you hope our favorite player scores a touchdown to win the game when our team is down 21 in the fourth quarter. It's likely to cause any object close to us to be launched like a missile at the wall.
Make comments and observations only if you know they are accurate. Don't just keep talking and hope that something sticks. All that's going to do is annoy us. Even if you can make only one insightful comment during the game, make the comment and stop there.
Ask Questions and Show Interest in Learning
If you don't understand sports, ask questions... but, not too many. It may take a while to pick up enough to feel like you get the game, but if you ask too many questions at once, you'll anger the guy you're dating. Ask a question here and there. Tell your guy that you kind of like this sports thing, but don't understand it very well yet.
Never, ever diminish the importance of sports
No guy thinks that sports can save the rainforests or stop world hunger. At least I hope there isn't anybody out there who thinks that. But, for a lot of guys, sports are the number one hobby. And, yes, we get into it. So, don't tell us too "calm down" or "get perspective". Sports are our passion and we enjoy it even when our team is losing. It helps us get out our emotions and frustrations.
These quick tips will help you get into your guy's hobby and spend more quality time with him. Who knows? Maybe when you learn a little more about sports, you'll get into them too.
