How to Improve Your Up and Down Short Game

Chipping and Putting Practice Technique

Often we practice just one piece of the equation such as putting or chipping alone. I like putting it together in this way because the real goal on the course is to hit one chip shot and one putt when you are just off the green. This technique reinforces that goal.

Find a practice green that allows chipping and putting. I like to start with 5 balls and my pitching wedge. I pick a hole on the practice green and chip the 5 balls from a spot off the green. I then take my putter and attempt to make all of the putts. When I have successfully made 5 of 5, I will drop down to a 9 iron and repeat the process. I then go through the other irons down to a 5 iron. Depending on the amount of time that you have, you may be able to only go through one iron sequence in your practice session. Alternatively, you can work with 2 or 3 balls instead of 5. The idea is to build consistency and confidence in your chipping and putting.

Do not get discouraged or frustrated. If you are unable to make all of the putts in the beginning, set a goal for yourself, such as 50%. As your skill level continues and you reach your goal, rachet up your goal for the next practice session by 10% until you reach 100% goal. If you have a setback or you haven't been able to practice for a while, reduce the goal and start the process again.

This technique also is effect for getting bunker shots up and down.

Once you are on the course, use the iron(s) that you have practiced and are confident in to make your chip shots. You will be more relaxed because you have practiced this shot many times. Over time, keep track of your successes versus your attempts. Your percentage of success should improve.
