How to Improve Your Jump Shot

Chrisdavy
  1. Step 1
    • YOUR HANDS. Your shooting hand is under the ball comfortably, just off the palm. Your other palm is at 100 degrees from the bottom of the ball. Your fingers are all on the ball but relaxed. It doesn't matter whether you're going straight up, fading left or right; aim the ball at the farthest part of the rim from you.
    • Step 2

YOUR SHOT. The biggest mistake people make is to shoot with both hands. You shoot with ONE hand. The other hand, the one off to the side, is there to GUIDE. Especially do not move the thumb of the guide hand. People think they need to do that for extra power sometimes. No -- if you don't feel you are strong enough to accurately push a 20 foot jumper with one hand, you need more conditioning...but do NOT move the fingers of the guide hand. The purpose of that hand is to stay completely still.

    • Step 3

YOUR RELEASE. Your shooting hand is at a natural angle and your wrist flicks comfortably hard as the ball rolls off of it. The ball rolls off every part of the fingers of your shooting hand. A huge mistake people make is to not follow through the closer they are to the basket. The result is that they can hit the 15 footer but not the 10 footer. Practice the SAME motion no matter how far you are from the basket.
