·Get rid of the clutter. My husband and I discovered that there are many things such as papers, books and toys that are stored in the kitchen that need to be stored somewhere else. So we took everything that didn't belong and placed it in the right place.
·Trash any appliance or food that has not been used in the last month. It is disgusting but I have found crackers, cheese and juice that I have had for a long time that needed to be thrown away. When we did this I noticed a big difference in the odor of our kitchen. At the same time we were working on getting rid of any kitchen appliances that we didn't need. For example, we have had a hand can opener for six years and have never used it. We took our entire appliance and sold most of it on Ebay. In return we put the money towards improving our kitchen.
·Remodel your cabinets. The appearance of your cabinets makes a world of difference. We looked into getting new cabinets at Lowes but found out it would cost us thousands of dollars. It wouldn't be so bad if we were going to continue living in this home but we are not. So another less expensive option was having our cabinets resurfaced. This is basically using your same cabinets just changing the exterior look of the cabinets to make it look up to date. We strongly considered this but then thought of an even less expensive idea, which is to paint the cabinets on our own. The paint job did wonders. It made our kitchen look very new. Plus it cost use only a few hundred dollars.
·Purchase new appliances. Get rid of the appliances that look dull and outdated. Purchase a few new pieces that will give the kitchen a new look. You can find nice new appliances for an inexpensive price at places like Sears and Wal-Mart.
·After you have completed the major part of the remodeling add a few special touches to your kitchen. For example, I bought a plant and placed it near the sink by my window. I also bought some nice scented candles to keep the kitchen smelling good.
These tips have greatly helped our kitchen to improve and I know it will help you to. Please write me if you have additional suggestions on how a kitchen can be improved.
