How to Improve Your Mental Health

Healthy living, healthy body, exercise, eat right, you see and hear this everywhere and everyday, on TV, in magazines and newspapers but what about a healthy mind? In order to have a healthy body you have to have a healthy mind to achieve this. The mind controls what you do for your body so if that mind is out of sorts there goes the body.

There are many things that can be done to help the mind stay healthy. The main thing is to recognize when something is wrong and seek treatment as soon as possible. Almost all individuals will feel sad or depressed from time-to-time in their lifetime and this is caused from life's difficult circumstances that humans have no control over; but if this feeling lasts for weeks or months on end, then this can become a cause for concern.

Depression is the most common mental health disorder for thousands of people but the good news is it can be treated with medication and life style changes. Another mental health condition is Phobia. Phobia is the fear of something. Lots of people have a fear of height or spiders or elevators but phobias like these can be over come.

Other people have it much more seriously. There are people who are afraid of stepping out of their own home or are afraid of being left alone. These types of phobias plus many others can make everyday life impossible to live in a normal fashion. There are treatments for these and other types of phobias including therapy and medications.

It can be difficult for others to detect if someone is afflicted with a mental illness. If you are close to the individual then there are thing that are noticeable like, a change in the person's behavior, change in their daily patterns, sleeps more or less, complete change in eating habits, seems angry all the time and has trouble dealing with the little thing in their life so they become enraged.

In the treatment plan it involves medication such as anti-depressants. There are many anti-depressants on the market today. It can take several different medication attempts to find the right one that will help the individual. This can be frustrating and time consuming but when the right medication is found it will make all the difference in the world.

Addressing mental health disorders and treating early, the results are promising. Physicians will work with the family and patient to develop a treatment plan that will help them get back into their everyday routine and life.

One thing to keep in mind is that you as an outsider, not the patient, can't force an individual to get and receive help. The individual has to want the help in order to go down the road of recover. You need to be a friend and stay close; in time the individual will see that they do need the help and will ask. Remind them that there is no shame in seeking treatment. Million of people get the help they need everyday.

There are several things that a mental health provider will encourage a patient to do in order to help maintain a good mental outlook as they go through treatment and incorporate these into there everyday lives, and they are:

1. Get the right amount of sleep every night.
2. Eat well-balanced nutritious food.
3. Exercise.
4. Talk - Communicating is very important. Talk about your feelings and listen to what the recipient has to say.
5. If you feel stress coming on, feeling overwhelmed, take a short walk, stretch your muscles, then come back to tackle the problem.
6. Pace yourself. Don't expect to do all the things you were able to do in the past. Set a schedule that you can live with, realistic.
7. Remember negative thinking is gone, thrown out the window. Try to think positive.
8. If something that comes up and a major decision needs to be made, talk it over with your therapist or someone that you trust to help you.
9. Understand that time is one your side and in time things will be looking up!

Mental health issues have to be dealt with in order for the person to overcome them and live a normal life. Many of these mental health conditions will be with the patient for the rest of their life and have to be monitored on an on-going basis with their doctor. Patients have to be open and honest with there therapist so does any family members that are involved. They have to talk about their feeling, how they are handling everyday situations. Part of the mental health treatment is feeling accepted and the love from family member and friends.
