Practice Being Optimistic. That's right, for every lousy situation, for every bad mood there is a silver lining. Purposefully look for the positive aspects of your day, the current situation or the people around you.
Make a List. Just jot down a bunch of things that make you feel happy. Most likely, the act of writing everything down will automatically improve your mood. Add your list to a journal that includes notes, pictures or anything that makes you happy. When you're feeling down, you can read through your journal for an instant boost.
Take a Walk. Get outside and into the fresh air. Just the change of scenery will improve your mood, not to mention the bit of exercise you'll get even by walking around the block.
Laugh Away the Blues. Think about a particularly funny incident from your past, watch a sitcom for a half hour, make up your own joke or call one of your more humorous friends to get you to giggle. That fact is that it's pretty difficult to stay with that bad mood when you're laughing your head off.
Visualize Happy Situations. Think back to that great vacation or when you went to that fantastic new restaurant or to that amazing party you hosted. Give yourself a few minutes to languish in the memories and how great you felt. Keep those feelings in mind as you continue on with your day.
Force Yourself to Think Positively. When you do find yourself in one of those bad moods, don't focus on it. Focusing on just how awful you feel, is guaranteed to make you feel even worse. Instead, make yourself think positively. Tell yourself that this mood is going to pass, that the day will get better or anything that makes you feel more positive.
Know What's Out of Your Control. Learn to differentiate what is and isn't in your control. Then tell yourself that when it comes to things you can't control, you aren't going to get upset about and it's not going to ruin your mood.
Nurture Yourself. It's important that everyday, you have time to take care of and nurture yourself. Whether it's just 15 minutes to relax and refresh or two hours so that you can really indulge yourself, take time for you every day. You'll notice how quickly your mood improves and how good you feel in general.
Get Healthy. In general, if you're eating a healthy diet, getting regular exercise and adequate amounts of sleep, your overall mood is going to be positive. Just a few consistent changes in this arena and you'll drastically improve your mood.
Before Bedtime Meditation. Every night, take a few minutes to ponder and meditate on the positive things that have happened during the day. Fall asleep thinking positive thoughts and see if it doesn't help improve your mood.
When to See the Doctor. If your bad moods are consistent or pervasive and nothing seems to help, perhaps it's time to schedule an appointment with your doctor. Some people can suffer with mood disorders or other underlying medical conditions that impact their mood. Talking with your doctor can give you the support and treatment you need to improve your mood once and for all.
