How to Improve a Peanut Butter Sandwich

A peanut butter sandwich all by itself is a good thing. But there are ways to improve a good thing. Whether you call it jelly, jam, preserves, or marmalade, the sweet taste of fruit topping makes a plain peanut butter sandwich, something special. Here are more ways to improve a peanut butter sandwich.

Try Different Peanut Butter Varieties

Peanut butter brands come in crunchy and smooth varieties and differ with regard to additional ingredients. Each texture presents its own mouth-feel, and each taste is unique. You can experience gourmet organic peanut butter spreads, or you can go for the hydrogenated sugary varieties. A change in peanut butter can be an improvement on the usual peanut butter sandwich.

Grill It, Toast It, or Open-Face It

You can sandwich peanut butter between two slices of bread, or you can top a single slice of bread, and leave your sandwich open-faced. You can toast your bread slices before making your sandwich, or you can try this delicious twist on a peanut butter sandwich. Butter the outsides of the sandwich and grill your peanut butter sandwich in a skillet. If you've never tried grilled peanut butter sandwich, you have missed a treat.

Create a Dessert

Another way to improve a peanut butter sandwich is to toast a slice of bread and slather on peanut butter while the bread is still warm. Then place slices of banana or strawberry on top of the warm peanut butter, and drizzle with honey or agave nectar syrup. It's like eating dessert.

Make Sweetened Peanut Butter

Agave nectar syrup, honey, and pure maple syrup are liquid sweeteners that mix well with peanut butter. You can blend peanut butter with one of these sweeteners and slather the delicious concoction on a slice of bread or toast. Be aware; you might be tempted to eat more than one slice.

Switch Out the Bread

Other than a slice of bread to hold your peanut butter, you can use a rice cake, a biscuit, a croissant, a pancake, a waffle, French toast, or a wrap. Fresh fruit or preserves topping your peanut butter tastes great on either griddle cakes or quick breads. If you're making a peanut butter wrap, you can add sliced apples, bananas, strawberries, or any other delicious and exotic fruit choices.

Add White Fluff

A favorite of both little kids and big kids--a peanut butter sandwich topped with marshmallow cream is always a winner. You can pile marshmallow cream on thick--mostly because it's nearly impossible to spread a thin layer. The goal is to keep the marshmallow cream from oozing out from between the crusts when you take a bite.

If you've been making your peanut butter sandwich the same old way for years, why not experiment and try something new? Improve your peanut butter sandwich. Try different peanut butter varieties, use different sweeteners, spread your peanut butter on a different type of bread, or top your peanut butter sandwich with slices of fresh fruit.
