How to Improve Your Time-Management Skills

Dee Davis
Have you ever wished you had more time in the day? There are obviously good reasons for feeling that way. You may not have enough time to sleep, work, play or to spend with your children or a loved one; unfortunately we cannot make the days longer, but we can create more time in the day to do what needs to be done. In this article I will be looking at some things that one can do to get some personal time in, daily.

WAKING UP EARLY:

Wake up 15 to 30 minutes earlier than usual and mentally project the day ahead. This is essential, because you will find that it helps to prepare for the day ahead and to also receive it in a more positive way.

PRIORITIZE:

Ask yourself what it is you need more time to do that you tend to neglect or put off daily. Identify what that is and the importance of completing this task and take the time out to get it done.

PUTTING THINGS OFF:

Put things off for another day if you can. If the day has worn on and there is still a lot to do, leave what can be done another day, for another day.

CREATE A TO-DO LIST:

Create a to-do list of things that need to be done. This will not only help you to prioritize, but also beat procrastination.

ASK FOR HELP:

Most of us never learn 'how' to ask for help. I think this is very important for us all to understand and also apply to our daily lives. We are always so busy that we keep going and don't think to ask for help; as a result we become burnt out. Therefore, don't forget to ask for help, because that is one sure way to reduce the tasks on your to-do list and get more accomplished over a short period of time.

DO NOT TAKE ON MORE THAN YOU CAN HANDLE:

Most of us do not know how to say no to others. Therefore, when we are asked to help a friend, family member, or our boss with a task, we tend to say "yes," when we are the ones who actually need the help. Learn to say "no," or "not this time around," or "I have too much on my plate right now." Whatever works for you.

These are just some baby steps that one can take in improving one's time management skills. Make it work for you.
