How to Improve Your Writing Easily

Ruwan G.
Hey you. Want to learn how to write better? To create a complex melody of words that flows across your paper like rippling waves in the sea? Alright I'm being silly, but if you do want to make writing of a higher caliber, there are a few simple things that you can do.

1. Proofread: The most obvious yet often overlooked tip there is. And when I mean proofread, I mean to actually read what you wrote; going through it once with the spell-check does not suffice. I know that its hard to find every last itty bitty mistake in longer writings, but the more times you go over it, the better off you are. Finding even one little spelling or grammatical error can kinda ruin things for the reader. You might also find words or phrases in your writing that sound strange, which leads to my next tip...

2. Read it out Loud: This is a great way to improve your writing, because by reading it out loud you can identify what words and phrases sound right and what sound just plain weird. You can then change these and therefore improve the readability of your writing.

3. Increase your Vocabulary: Yeah you probably won't be able to do this immediately, unless you have a socket in your head that you can download a dictionary into. But all you really need to do is to read more. Books, newspapers, magazines, or if your so inclined, a dictionary itself. You will naturally increase your word knowledge, and therefore have more choices of words and phrases you can use in your writing.

4. Put yourself in the reader's shoes: Seriously; try it. The best way to know if your writing will be interesting is to go through the motions yourself. This sounds like tip #2, but when your doing this, you need to ask yourself a few questions. Is this paper interesting? Am I hooked enough to keep reading? Do I have little trouble understanding this writing?

5. Develop your "Voice": Why should other people want to read your writing? Because it should have that style or flair that is uniquely you. Writings should never be robotic or monotone; let your own style of writing take charge. Be Unique. Sometimes the concept of "voice" is hard to understand. Basically, if you read something and it doesn't feel like it was written by a actual human being, then it probably lacks the "voice".

So there you have it. A few tips you can use to make your writing better. Who knows, now you could go write a book and make a million bucks, now that you are this godly master of writing. But in all seriousness, writing is a skill that is essential in today's world for numerous reasons. Maybe you write for fun; stories and poems and such. Maybe your a freelancer and write articles for newspapers and magazines. Maybe your a student with this hulking monster of a term paper. Whatever your situation is, I hope these tips help to develop your writing skills and take you just a little farther.
