How to Increase Your Interior Designer Salary

Jim Posey
Interior designing has become quite the trendy profession in recent years with celebrity interior designers and even a reality show based off of the profession. Most people envision interior designers as hipsters who pull in a large amount of money by telling people where to put their futons. Those involved in the work, though, appreciate the hard hours that go into each project and the sometimes embarrassment of an income that will come out of it. If you find that you are not making enough money as interior designer don't be helpless take action.

"Adapt Yourself"

Being an interior designer is not enough any more. There are many different interior designers besides you on the internet and in phone books that people can ring up just as easily as you. It is up to you to give your business some defining characteristic that makes people say," this is who I need". You should base your entire business and marketing on a specific niche that needs to be fulfilled by an interior designer. In other words, pick something to specialize in. It can be something you're already good at or maybe whatever seems to be the most popular in your area. This way when people want a specific service your name will jump out at them. You will see that specializing yourself might split you off from some of the possible clientele but will also increase your interior designer salary.

"Learn-As Much As You Can"

There are many colleges that offer degrees in interior design. If you do not already have a degree in some type of interior design then call your mom and have her bag a lunch for you its time to go back to school. Degrees come at a price tag but they also come with the ability to charge more for your services. Taking what we know from above, choosing to specialize in a certain kind of degree from the get go will greatly increase the odds of you becoming the go to designer for a specific niche. Check at your local community collages to see if they have any interior design programs.

"Be a Professional"

Remember that you are walking into somebody's house and changing design elements around. It is very hard for someone to feel secure in this kind of situation without some type of cultural reassurance. This comes in the form of licenses. Try to be licensed in as many different disciplines that relate to interior design as you can. There are even licenses to just do interior design. A lot of people try to push their luck by not investing the time to get these licenses but they wish that they did when they get fined. It is also a great way to advertise your service.
