You don't have to look like society wants you to in order to gain self confidence but if you care for yourself, you'll feel better about yourself in turn which will inadvertently increase your self confidence. You don't have to spend a fortune on products to make yourself "appear" cleaner either.
Some simple things you can do are brush your teeth regularly. While most people brush their teeth, you could go the extra mile and brush three times a day. Most people brush twice day, once in the morning and once at night. Floss your teeth each night. You'd be surprised how many people neglect to do this. Try to shave consistently. This will give people the impression that you are always keeping yourself groomed. If you go for the clean shaven look, make sure you don't have a shadow everyday. If you like to leave a bit of facial hair, be sure to groom it regularly while keeping the rest clean.
You can make sure you clothes are always clean and stain free. Invest in a clothes iron to iron out your wrinkly clothes. Even your white undershirts should be wrinkle free. You'll never know when an upper layer of clothes will come off. Try to choose a deodorant that has a light smell without being overpowering. If you do use a cologne or perfume, try not to put so much on. Many people find it annoying if it can be smelled ten feet away. Women seem to do this more often than men. A lot of people think that an over abundance of cologne or perfume is a means to cover up any odor that shouldn't be there. This can give off the exact opposite impression you want.
Take showers regularly at least once a day. When washing your hair, try to wash it once every other day, but not everyday. The reason is your scalp produces oils which are healthy for your hair, and washing it everyday will get rid of that oil. Now, if you have oily hair that could use a washing everyday, then by all means wash your hair everyday. Another great hygiene tip is to make sure your finger and toenails are properly clipped at all times. Having your nails clipped is a great way of telling others that you do care for yourself. Try not to bite them at they'll become more jagged and any handshake you may have to do may end up in an accidental slice.
Finally, carry a few breath mints on hand and/or some gum whenever you decide to go out. While not necessary, the act of having it can be a great tool when dealing with others. You'll come across as clean and others may end up looking to you for answers. Being clean and hygienic can give you great self confidence. Even if people don't notice the hygiene, you will and your self confidence will be felt by others which is just what you want.
Self confidence is a great tool that can be used to be charismatic - a person worth spending time with and going out of the way to help. Who knew that hygiene could have such an impact on society?
