These subscribers gained through articles are predisposed to what you offer as they practically opt-in pre-sold. Additionally, this will increase your creditability as an expert in your field so the stage has been set to sell your products.
Many list builders use the free e-book giveaway to get more subscribers and growing their online business. This can be a viral list if you have the right marketing approach as the book spreads like a wildfire on autopilot 24 hours a day.
To maintain your subscriber list, you can use an email management company such as Aweber. This will allow your list to be managed with minimum input from you. Your email company will handle the new subscribers and allow them to sign up or be taken off the list. These programs can also automate your correspondence with the list on a predated timeline to your specification.
A more current approach is to increase your subscriber list by increasing your traffic. You can get involved with social media as a networking tool. This would include using Facebook, Twitter, Myspace, Technoratti and many others as a way to drive traffic to your sales pages and opt-in boxes. This is a great way to start to develop relationships before you attempt to make a sale.
Lastly, do not underestimate the value of leaving comments on blogs, forums and articles. Many people overlook this tactic because they do not think it works. However, this is a great way to piggyback on existing content that is pre-sold to what you have to offer these visitors.
