How to Increase the Speed of an Internet Connection

Brad Wood
If you are facing a slow Internet connection and you have to wait endlessly for a site to open or for a mail to be sent then just follow the steps below and you will be able to reduce the frustration. This solution is, though, only for Microsoft Windows XP Professional or Home Edition.

Windows XP has, by default, built-in and enabled, a feature that reserves a part of the bandwidth available to you for its own use. This bandwidth is generally 20% by default. It is used for downloading the updates from Microsoft's servers and keep your system updated. It also uses this bandwidth to inform Microsoft's Developer Network about the system configuration and any errors or crashes that has been encountered by your system so that they can improve the Operating System and give you a better service as soon as possible.

But those who use a slow Internet connection suffer from frustration and are not able to work smoothly because of this problem. So for those users the solution of this problem is available.

Go to Start Menu and navigate to RUN. In it type gpedit.msc. This is the command for opening and editing the Group Policies of your system. Once it opens up, locate Computer Configuration on the right panel of the window. Navigate to Administrative Templates. Double click on Network and in it go to QoS Packet Scheduler. There on the right panel, you will see some values below Layer-2 Priority Value. The first option is Limit Reservable Bandwidth. Double click it and a window will open. In the Settings Panel, click on Enabled. This will activate a option below with 20% as the default value of it. Just reduce it to 0% and save the option. Congratulations, you have increased the speed of your Internet connection by almost 20% now.

Now to further increase the speed of your net connection, search Google for some software that have a good reputation among the respected reviewers, that claim to increase the speed of Internet by almost 100%. If you do not want to spend money for such software then just add the word "free" in the Google Search. But always prefer those solutions that have proven track-record. Some of those are Internet Download Manager and Download Acceleration Plus for increasing the download speed by a few multiples. These are not free software so you will have to pay for them after the evaluation period expires to use them with full potential. Just check those out and take a decision that proves to be a long-term benefit instead of a short-term profit.
