How to Increase Staff Retention

Kristine Brite
Keeping employees and reducing turnover are almost always more cost effective for a business. Having seasoned employees keeps the business running smoothly. Employee retention is improved through concentrated efforts by upper management and the board of directors. Keeping employees from leaving your business means keeping employees content and involved. Work that is too boring will leave employees seeking something more challenging.

Step 1

Hire employees most likely to stay with the company. Don't hire people too qualified for a position, or they will probably be looking for another position. Hire people that live near the work place because they are more likely to stay with the company.

Step 2

Create incentives and prizes for good work. Reward employees with electronics or vacations.

Step 3

Create a flexible work place. If an employee is a few minutes late once or twice a month, be understanding. Also let employees have time off when needed. Give employees plenty of vacation and sick days.

Step 4

Allow employees to make mistakes without fear of retribution. Employees that live in fear in the workplace are more likely to leave.

Step 5

Give employees good benefit packages like medical and retirement plans. These will make an employee more likely to stay with the company.
