How to Increase Your Writing Volume

Roger C.
Writing is a skill that not everybody has well developed. It is a form of art that grows with the author in experience and effectiveness. Also, as with many other professions, the more you write the more you can write later. It is the same principle that applies to bakers that can make a few pieces of bread an hour and then are able to increase their production many times, or the rich entrepreneurs that develop a system that makes them money even faster, so in essence, the more you write the more you increase your capacity to write more and the less you do so, the harder it is to get going again.

Some amateur writers don't realize that writing is a process and they take the approach of trying to get everything done at once, thus ending up with unpolished works or sometimes even incomplete projects. They attempt to create their finished project in a single draft, and then wonder what went wrong. Professional writers know that a good piece of writing will not be completed on the first draft; they use many drafts before being satisfied with the result.

Even before writing your first draft, you must do some planning. Take a day to gather all the information you may need, create a workflow, charts, outlines, free writing or anything you need to speed up your progress later on. You'll grow in discipline and your writing will be more effective.

Getting started can be the most difficult part when you want to advance your work. You may not feel in the mood, depressed, or think your project is dull and boring, but no matter what, you must force yourself to start because otherwise procrastination will kick in with very bad results. Once you force yourself to get started, stay focused and you will realize that after ten to fifteen minutes your mind will clear up and you will have a steady flow of ideas.

Most people work harder when they feel the pressure of a deadline coming soon, so setting yourself writing goals will improve your performance if you have a hard time getting started. A deadline will give you defined time limits to complete the different stages of your project which will allow you to have a better organization.

Remember to use these techniques next time you have to deliver a writing project. By planning ahead, setting goals and revising your work you will be able to defeat procrastination and deliver high quality results in a timely manner.
