How to Make an Inexpensive, Casual Sangria

LM
Though the exact history of sangria is cloudy, we do know that it originated in Spain and typically consists of wine, fruit, a sweetener and optional liquor.

One of the best things about sangria is its versatility. It's easy to experiment with different wines and fruits. You're only limited by your imagination.

All it takes are a few simple steps to create an inexpensive, casual sangria.

Step 1: Pour a bottle of chilled wine into a pitcher.

It all starts with a bottle of chilled wine. Red or white, sweet or dry, cheap or expensive - the choice is yours.

Since the major component of sangria is wine, it might make sense to use a good bottle. This isn't required. In fact, sometimes the latter tastes better. The huge advantage of inexpensive, cheap wine its positive impact on the wallet.

My article on inexpensive white wines is a great place to start for sangria-worthy wines.

Step 2: Add thinly sliced fruit.

Typical fruits include juicy peaches, Valencia oranges and apples (any variety). Be sure the fruit is ripe.

Be sure to collect the juices as you slice the fruit, and then carefully pour them into the pitcher. This enhances the flavor considerably and acts as a natural sweetener. If using Valencia oranges, consider squeezing one into the pitcher.

To keep the sangria budget friendly, purchase in-season fruits. Not only are they cheaper, they taste better too.

Step 3: Add optional liquor.

The optional addition of liquor takes this fruity wine punch to a whole new level. Brandy is a common ingredient. Other options include rum, vodka, gin or triple sec.

Add ΒΌ cup of liquor per bottle (750 ml) of wine.

Step 4: Allow the sangria to steep.

The wine needs time to absorb all those fruity flavors. Or, is it the fruit that needs time to absorb the wine? Regardless, steeping is important for well-flavored sangria.

Allow to steep up to 24 hours in the refrigerator.

Step 5: Serve over ice.

Pour the sangria over ice and enjoy!

I had no idea that's how sangria is made. It's sort of even kind of healthy. But I can get past that.
