How to Infuse Your Bedroom with Relaxing Scents

Robert Borden
Your bedroom is supposed to be a "safe haven," a place where you can let the cares of the day melt away as you drift off to a peaceful night's sleep. One way to create a relaxing environment is to infuse your bedroom with aromatherapy scents known for their stress-relieving properties. Many fragrances are know for being relaxing, but the most popular scent for the bedroom that can also relieve stress is lavender. This light and airy floral scent can make you forget about all the problems of the day in no time!

Also in the floral family, jasmine is also a fragrance widely used for relaxation. Many people find earthy scents like neroli and frankincense also help them to let loose and fall asleep. Whatever the fragrance, make sure it is one you like and that you don't find overpowering, since this will defeat the whole purpose of aromatherapy to begin with. Once you find a few relaxing fragrances that you like, there are several different ways you can choose to diffuse the scent into your bedroom.

One of the best ways to give your bedroom scent is by using a scented linen spray on the different fabric surfaces in your bedroom. These fabric sprays (which are like Febreze but come in a wider variety of fragrances) are available at retail stores like Bath & Body Works, Bed, Bath & Beyond, and even Target. You can spray a fine mist of the linen spray on your bedsheets, pillow cases, and curtains to add a light layer of fragrance to your bedroom. Try using the scented linen spray a couple of times per week for best results.

Candles are another great way to infuse your bedroom with a relaxing scent. Try lighting an aromatherapy candle a few hours before bedtime...you'll be surprised at just how fast you'll fall asleep when you choose the right fragrance. A bowl of potpourri placed on a night stand or scented sachet packets in the closet are some other great ways to add light layers of fragrance to your bedroom or a guest room. Don't be afraid to experiment and layer different fragrances on top of one another. If you try something and don't like it, you can quickly change the scent by substituting different fragrances. By following these simple steps, you can have your bedroom smelling great all the time and create the relaxing environment you've been dreaming of!

  • Candles & potpourri are a great way to add scent to a bedroom.
Linen sprays contain alcohol to help them evaporate quickly, and while you may be able to smell it in the bottle, the alcohol scent will disappear shortly after you spray it leaving just the intended fragrance on your fabric.

Relaxing and pleasing aromas really do put me in a better mood. I never bothered with it much before years ago, now I'm very sensitive to it. Great article, Robert!
