How to Make an Insect for a School Art Project

Step by Step Process for Creating an Insect Model

Kristen Wilkerson
When students study insects in school, having them create an insect as a model for either art or science class is a great way to emphasize important insect properties. Including six legs and antennae are both important. This article shares the step-by-step process of creating the insect in the photo. The process is very easy to follow.

Materials:
3 styrofoam balls
multi-colored yarn
colored toothpicks
glue
buggy eyes
pipe cleaners
fancy mini craft balls

Step One
Place a few strips of glue on each styrofoam ball and wrap them with yarn. Let dry. The yarn can be whatever color you want the insect's body to be.

Step Two
Dip toothpicks into glue and insert them into each styrofoam ball to help connect the balls, thereby forming the insect's body. Placing an extra toothpick at the rear of the insect will give it a stinger.

Step Three
Choose pipe cleaners for the legs, dipping one end in glue before inserting it into the midsection of the insect. Bend the legs appropriately.

Step Four
Choose pipe cleaners for the antennae. At the end of each, glue a fancy mini ball at the end for pizazz. Glue the bottom of the antennae into the head section of the insect.

Step Five
All that is left is to put on some buggy eyes and the insect is complete!
