How to Install Aftermarket Grips on Your Harley Davidson Motorcycle
Aftermarket Motorcycle Grips like the Kuryakyn ISO Grips Boost the Comfort of Your Harley Davidson
Kuryakyn ISO grips are easy to install on Harley Davidson Motorcycles, and provide more comfort and style than the standard motorcycle grips on your bike. Installing other aftermarket grips is just as easy, though. By helping to reduce the vibration that transfers from the motorcycle to your hands, ISO grips reduce fatigue and discomfort for riders. The added benefit is that they are one of the least expensive modifications you can make to your Harley Davidson Motorcycle that provides the most visual impact.
First off, you'll need some tools in order to complete the installation of the Kuryakyn ISO grips. They are as follows:
Immediately opposite of the jam nuts, above the stock Harley Davidson grip, you will see either two Torx or Hex screws, depending on what year Harley you own. Remove these screws. When you do, you will be able to remove the cable end from the housing. There are two brass ferrules as well. These will be reused and are not connected to the housing, so be careful not to lose them.
With the housing loose, you can slide the stock Harley Davidson grip off of the handle bar. The aftermarket grips slide over the same place. Simply reinstall the cable ends, brass ferrules and Torx or Hex Screws to complete the assembly.
Clutch Side Grip Replacement
Unlike the throttle side, the clutch side grip is glued in place. Begin by removing the screws in the switch housing. This will let you pry the housing apart slightly. Use a knife to slice through the rubber grip down to the metal, and then peel off the old Harley Davidson grip. Some of the residual glue will remain behind. Use the solvent to get this sticky stuff off the handlebars, then get the last of the solvent off with a rag. Once clean, scuff the metal with the sandpaper.
Apply the glue included with the Kuryakyn ISO grips or aftermarket grips to the metal of the handlebar, then quickly slide the replacement grip in place until it seats fully inside the housing. You only have a few seconds until the glue sets, so it's extremely important to work quickly. Once the grip is in place, reassemble the switch housing.
With both grips in place, you'll have to adjust the throttle to make sure that it's in the correct position. There's a screw in the end of the grip that you loosen and allows the throttle to move freely. With the screw loose, tighten up the throttle cable adjuster nuts and then roll the throttle to its desired position. Once in place, the last step is to tighten the screw in the end of the handle.
