How to Install Christmas Lights on a Christmas Tree

Alicia Bodine
Christmas is the time of year when we celebrate the birth of Christ and remember the importance of giving. With Christmas comes many decorations. One of them is a Christmas tree. Before ornaments and garland can be placed on a Christmas tree, you must add lights. There is a proper way to apply the lights to your tree so that it looks its best.

You will need:

Christmas tree lights
Christmas tree
Tree stand

Follow these steps to set up your Christmas tree lights:

Step 1:
Pick the area of your house where you want to place the Christmas tree. Keep in mind that you will need an outlet close by to plug the Christmas tree lights in to.

Step 2:
Place the tree in the stand and make sure it is sturdy. You don't want the tree to fall over and break any of the lights.

Step 3:
Take the lights out of the attic or out of a package if you just bought them. They need to be tested before you place them on a tree. To test them, place each strand one at a time in to an outlet. Look at each light to see if it is lit. If it isn't you can pull it out and place a new one in it.

Step 4:
Decide how many strands of lights you want to use on your tree. If you have a 5-6 foot tree you will need 2-3 strands. Trees that are larger or wider will need 3-4 strands.

Step 5:
Take your first strand of lights and head to the top of the tree. If you can't reach, use a step ladder. Use the opposite end of the plug and start swirling the lights at a slight diagonal around the tree and heading downward. You want the lights to sit gently on near the edges of the branches.

Step 6:
Plug a new strand in to the end of the first strand if you didn't get all the way around the tree. Then continue working in a spiral pattern until you get to the bottom of the tree. You may need to add a third or fourth strand the same way you added the second.

Step 7:
Plug the final strand of lights in to the wall outlet. Unplug the lights before you go to bed at night.

Tips:
Use an extension cord if your last strand of lights can't reach the outlet.

Warning:
Make sure your lights don't get too hot. You don't want them to set your Christmas tree on fire.

  • Check each bulb to make sure it is lit.
  • You will need more than one strand of lights to cover your tree.
  • Use an extension cord if your lights don't reach an outlet.
