How to Install a Drop Ceiling

A drop ceiling can alter the proportions in a room; make the room appear smaller and intimate. They are often very easy to install, and can cover an unattractive or unfinished ceiling. Because they make very little impact on the walls and ceiling of your home, they can be a good short-term option to cover a ceiling that needs more work while you concern yourself with other projects.

A drop ceiling is a system composed of a metal grid and ceiling panels that are placed in that grid. Panel sizes vary, with the most common size being 2 feet by 4 feet. You can also buy drop ceilings that are meant to cover light fixtures. These drop ceilings are often made of translucent materials that cause an overall glow from the ceiling. There are also lighting fixtures that are made to exactly fit into one ceiling panel, although these are often seen in more industrial uses.

Once you have decided on the style of drop ceiling to use, decide how many panels you will need. The panels should be centered within the room, and all perimeter panels should be as equal in size as possible. The easiest way to ensure this happens is to draw a diagram of your ceiling on graph paper. Using on box to equal one square foot, draw the panel system onto your diagram. Then you must only count the amount of panels required.

Before installing your drop ceiling, figure out how high you wish to install it. Minimum ceiling height is commonly 7 feet 6 inches, so be aware of that while deciding. Drop ceilings must also be at least 5 inches below any lights and three inches below plumbing. Check local and state codes for any other restrictions, and always follow the codes in your area.

Install your drop ceiling perpendicular to the joists. Always follow the manufacturer's instructions while installing your system. Common installation requires using eyehooks attached to the joists and #12 wire to hang the grid from your ceiling. The drop ceiling grid is normally attached every four feet to a joist. Make sure that you are using the recommended type of hardware and wire to attach the grid.

If a piece is too long for the space, carefully cut it to size using tin snips. All intersections of the grid should carefully be secured. Often there are tabs or other methods built into the grid ceiling system to secure the pieces together. Make sure every intersection is addressed while installing the system. Regularly use a level to ensure that your drop ceiling is not being installed at an angle.

After the grid is installed, place the panels into the grids of your drop ceiling. Cut the perimeter panels to fit the space. Keep in mind that the actual panels are slightly larger than the hole in the grid. Make sure to keep that extra allowance when you cut your own panels to fit. Soft, absorbent panels can often be cut using the same method used to cut drywall, while other panels will require a saw. If you do not have the proper equipment, a home improvement store should cut the panels for a fee.

Installing a drop ceiling can be difficult due to the awkward angles and use of ladders that are required.
