How to Install an External GPS Antenna

GPS navigators are popular tools for obtaining directions and ensuring that you never get lost. These navigators obtain their information from the Global Positioning System (hence, GPS), which is a space-based system offered by the United States. Therefore, for GPS handsets to function properly, they must have signal to the satellites to transfer the information, such as date, time and location to them. You can increase your GPS signal by installing an external GPS antenna to your device.

Things You'll Need

Soft cloth

GPS antenna

Heavy-duty tape

DC power adapter splitter

GPS navigator

Step 1

Clean the dashboard of your car off by wiping any dirt and dust from it with a soft cloth.

Step 2

Place the external GPS antenna where the top of the dashboard meets the bottom of the windshield, as this is where the antenna will likely receive the strongest signals.

Step 3

Secure the antenna to your dashboard by taping it with heavy-duty tape, such as duct tape or electrical tape.

Step 4

Plug the antenna into one of the DC power adapter splitters, and plug your GPS navigator into the other splitter.

Step 5

Plug the DC power adapter into the cigarette lighter to power both your external GPS antenna and your GPS.

Tips

Use a suction cup to mount the antenna to your dashboard if you don't want to use tape on your car.

Warnings

Beware of purchasing a GPS antenna that isn't compatible with your GPS.
