How to Install a Front Door Viewer - Door Knocker "Peep Hole"

Michael Robertson
There are many different types of door viewers. Door viewers come in kits that include door knockers and other decorative styles. A 160° or 180° will work in most front entry situations. If you are only installing a peep hole, then the only have to drill one hole. You will need to apply a little silicone around the lens to help keep moisture out. In this example we will go through the steps of installing a front door viewer with a door knocker.

Here are some of the tools that you will need; cordless drill and drill bit set, side cutters to cut the screws, standard and Philips screwdrivers, tape measure and a pencil. The first thing you want to do is mark the height on the door where you would like your front door viewer to be installed. Once you have marked the height, then center the front door viewer on the door and mark this location. To mark the location for the holes on the door knocker just measure the distance from the viewing hole to the top and bottom mounting holes and mark this with a pencil on the door.

Now drill all three holes with the appropriate size drill bit. Use the same drill bit for all three holes and then select a larger drill bit for the front door viewer. When drilling a hole for the front door viewer drill one side halfway and then go to the other side of the door and drill through that side halfway. This will prevent you from damaging either side of the door.

Cut the mounting screws for the door knocker to the appropriate length. Insert the screws through the door from the inside and mount the door knocker. Insert the peep hole and make sure you have the viewer on the exterior of the door, now insert the barrel from the inside and connected the two pieces.

Follow these simple steps and you will easily install your front door viewer, adding protection for your home and for your family. The new door knocker will also add more curb appeal to your home.
