How to Install an Indoor Water Fountain in Your Home

An indoor water fountain can provide you with hours and hours of calming and gentle mind refreshing therapy. And at a fraction of the cost of spas and other expensive therapeutic remedies. The calming effect of running water has long been recognized for its healing of the mind and soul. We humans just adore water, possibly because we are made up of so much water . We need water, and not just for drinking. Water is a vital part of our lives. So it is only natural that we love hearing the sound of water splashing or trickling down over a rock or some object. And why should we only hear that sound outside? It sounds just as lovely indoors on a cool fall evening or on a snowy day.

An indoor water fountain may sound like an expensive investment, but in actuality, it can be as simple or as elaborate as you want. The decision is yours. You can spend very little and purchase a small fountain that will sit on a table or shelf or be creative and build your own water fountain. Whatever you decide, you will enjoy it countless times.

So how do you go about actually putting a water fountain in your home? As I said earlier, it can be as simple as buying a fountain, filling it with water, and plugging it in. Presto! You've got your water fountain. Put it close to your favorite recliner or sofa, lay back and close your eyes. Imagine you are in the mountains and a gentle stream is flowing past you down toward the peaceful valley. That's all you have to do, close your eyes, and let your imagination take you to your favorite spot. The trickling sound of the water will ease your troubles away. And with the many styles and sizes of fountains available today, I'm sure you can find one you really like.

The most important part of installing an indoor water fountain is to place it where you will get the most enjoyment from it. You don't want to place it close to a television where it would have to compete with the noise from the tv. A study, den, home office, or a corner of the family room, far from the tv are great locations. Some people put them in foyers, but to me that is a waste of a good fountain. You don't spend much time in a foyer. My favorite spot is in my home office, since I spend so much time there. But it's your decision as to where you want the fountain. Just remember, once it is filled with water, it will be heavy. Even small fountains can be pretty heavy once you add the magical ingredient. So try to pick the right spot the first time. Once you have your location, you need to protect the floor where the fountain will be sitting. If it will be on a table or some kind of stand, you still will want to be sure there is no overspray from the fountain. A waterproof mat should be placed between the floor and the fountain. This is very important. Leaks do happen and you don't want a nasty surprise when you move the fountain.

An electrical outlet will be needed to run the pump which circulates the water. Generally, the pumps use a standard 110 receptacle. Try to keep the cord out of sight, yet you should be able to reach it to unplug it if necessary to shut the pump down. Hopefully, you chose a location that has a plug-in close by. You don't want to run the pump off of an extension cord. Extension cords are not meant for long time use. Plus, it would just look bad to have an extension cord stretched across the floor or around the wall.

After you've gotten the waterproof mat down and the fountain set, fill the fountain with water before turning on the pump. You will probably have to add more water as the pump begins to circulate it through the fountain. Keep in mind that if you have to stop the pump for some reason, you may have more water in the fountain than what it can hold.

Now you've got the basic set up done, you can get on to the fun and creative part. You may want to add some type of lighting to showcase the fountain. Adding plants, either live or artificial, give it a more natural look instantly. Colored rocks, seashells, or driftwood can be added to or around the fountain to help give it more appeal. Floating flowers in the fountain or pots of vibrant flowers nearby add to the beauty of the fountain.

So you see, an indoor fountain can actually be a focal point of a room if you want it to be. Or it can be hidden away in a quiet corner with a comfortable chair and a good book just calling out to you to come sit and enjoy. Either way, it will be source of enjoyment and a place of tranquility in a world where we need all the peace and tranquility we can get.
