How to Install More Memory in Dell Desktop

Maxwell Payne
If you want to increase the memory in your Dell desktop computer you need to upgrade the RAM. Random access memory (RAM) is the memory used by the various programs and applications that run on your Dell. Before beginning, it is important to ensure you have the proper RAM for your specific Dell computer.

Shut down the computer and unplug the computer from the wall outlet or power strip. Disconnect the monitor, printer and other peripheral connections.

Remove the two holding screws on the one side of the rear of the desktop tower. Depending on your Dell model, the screws may be on the left or right. Some models feature a latch or push button instead of two holding screws.

Slide the side panel toward the back of the computer after removing the two screws. If your case has a latch, pull it back while sliding the panel. If the case has a button, push it inward while sliding the panel back. When the panel has moved a couple of inches, lift it upward from the back until it comes off the computer.

Look inside the computer for the memory slots. If the slots are full and you are replacing a RAM module, grasp the holding clips on each side of the module you are replacing. Spread the holding clips so they pull away from the module. When the module comes loose, grasp the top of it and pull it straight out.

Hold the new RAM module in one hand so that the gold colored connector lines on one edge are facing the RAM slot in the computer. Note the small slit that will line up to a small ridge along the slot. If this ridge does not line up with the slit, you are holding the RAM upside down.

Use your other hand to hold the two holding clips on the RAM slot open while you firmly push the RAM module into the slot. When it is in the slot, release the holding clips. Push the RAM module the rest of the way in until the clips click into place. Before handling RAM modules or touching anything inside the computer, discharge static electricity that may be in your hands by touching a metal surface not connected to the computer.
