How to Install Neon Car Lights

Installing neon car lights under our cars need not be complicated. First of all it's important to understand a little bit about wiring and the different coloured wires before beginning any electrical task. Before doing any electrical work on any type of vehicle, disconnect the car battery, by disconnecting the negative battery cable.

Once the battery is disconnected its important to look at the area under the car where you will be installing the neon lights. Any light installation means that holes will have to be drilled, and you want to make sure you know exactly where to drill them.

Safety is paramount when working on any vehicle, so you first want to raise the vehicle so you can see exactly where to best install the neon lights. Using a lift or a jack in a safe environment is the best bet, and having a partner watch out for your safety is always a good choice. Once raised you can check the location where you wish to install the lights, and make sure the area of the car you wish to drill is not rusted or corroded. Also make sure you are not in any danger of drilling through break lines, fuel lines or the exhaust system.

Before you drill any holes make sure you don't drill them too big, or you will only have to re do them. Once done, place the brackets on the car and screw in the screws, don't put them in all the way until you are certain you have everything correctly installed, and then tighten them all individually.

The wires from the neon tube lights should be facing the front of the vehicle. If you install the lights backward, you will have great difficulty in getting wires to connect. Once this is done, you need to install the neon light kit transformer. The transformer needs to be located close to the car battery in order to get power from the transformer to the lights. You will need to drill mounting holes for the transformer to be attached, and this should be done as close to the car battery as possible. In order to complete this step, it is best to bring your car down from the mount or remove the jack. Never over reach when trying to drill holes or you may have a nasty accident.

Once the holes are drilled, you again need to place brackets and screws to hold the transformer in place. Next, the transformer needs to have a power source, so you need to connect the power wire from the transformer to the positive side of the car battery. Another option is to connect the power wire to the stereo system, which can be done by drilling a hole to attach the power wire through the dashboard and connecting it to the stereo system In this case the stereo system becomes the power supply for the transformer, which in turn powers the under the car neon lights.

Next in the wiring process is to attach the Earth wire or Negative ground wire as it is sometimes called to the chassis of the vehicle. This completes the full power circuit of the neon car lights.

Installing the off/on switch is the last step in installing the neon lights. This switch should be included within the kit, and should be mounted in an easy to reach spot on the dashboard. This switch is powered by a fuse, which needs to be connected to a power supply and to the transformer. The easiest way to install the switch is to drill through the firewall into the engine compartment, so the wire can be connected to the car battery.

The final step is to make sure all neon tubes are plugged into the transformer, and tighten all the screws one by one. Now your ready to enjoy your neon car lights.
