Step1:
Always use lights that are recommended for outdoor use. Outdoor lighting uses heavy electrical wiring and is more durable against the weather.
Step2:
Make sure the lights are U/L approved and have in-line fuse for protection.
Step3:
Any extension cords you use outside, needs to be made for outside use and U/L approve.
Step4:
Any open end sockets on your outside lights need to be covered with a plastic plug cap. Never leave unused sockets on your lights exposed.
Step5:
Plug your lights into an outdoor outlet. Never run wires through doorways or windows as they may cut into the electrical wire and cause a short.
Step6:
Try keeping electrical wires off the ground. Ice and snow, lying on top of the wires, will degrade the insulation and over time, the insulation will crack.
Step7:
Whenever you are hanging light outdoors, use proper hooks designed for outdoor light. A gust of wind can easily blow your lights away.
