Your first step is to collect all the necessary tools and supplies that you need for the project. You will need nails, a hammer, measuring tape, wood shims, level, caulk and insulation.
Before you go out shopping for patio doors, take the measurements of the door opening so that you know what size of patio door to buy. For the height, measure from the top of the opening down to the floor, and for the width measure from stud to stud.
Another thing you need to do before going out shopping is to consider what type of patio doors you would like to have for your house. One nice option is French doors if you have the space and they match the decor of your home. Locate a reputable patio door or manufacturer in your area so that you can review the different options that are available to you. Almost all patio doors come pre-hung these days, but just make sure that they are pre-hung. It will make the installation process very easy. When you purchase your new patio doors they should be one inch smaller horizontally and vertically than the measurements you took of the door opening.
Once you have selected and purchased your patio doors and get them home, it's time to install them. Center your new pre-hung patio door in the door opening and make sure the doors are swinging out. Nail the pre-hung door unit down with your hammer and nails, but not all the way. You first need to get the door level.
Use your level to check to see if the patio door is plumb. If it is not completely level, use your shims on the sides of the door to get it level. After you get your patio door completely level you can countersink the nails you had previously nailed in. Add insulation around the studs and jambs. Also, if your patio door came with a trim kit you can also install that. Just follow the instructions that came with the kit. Your last step is to caulk the joints. This will weatherproof and seal your patio door. At this point your new patio door will be installed.
