Interested in upgrading your computer's memory? For whatever reason you are upgrading your memory, it is important to know a few key facts which will essentially help you in performing a quick and clean installation of your new RAM.

The first step in RAM installation is simply opening up your computer. With all the different computer cases out there today, there are an abundance of methods out there that designer's have created to make it easier to open up your case. Usually you either need to unscrew the case from the chassis, pull a plastic object which unlocks it from the case, or just pull or push on it slightly with your palms down on it for maximum traction. It may be different for every case so be sure to read your user's manual on how to do it.

Before opening up your computer, be sure to unplug all the cables connected to your computer - especially the power cable. After unplugging everything, be sure to wait at least 30 seconds for the capacitors to discharge.

Once your case is opened up, locate the empty RAM sockets. Before doing anything at this point, be sure to keep in mind the possibility up building up static electricity. This generally isn't an issue but it is useful to be aware of it. A engineer's rule of thumb is generally to just touch a grounded metal surface every now and then to prevent a static charge from forming.

Once you are all prepped, locate the socket or sockets you will be putting the RAM into. Once located make sure the clip on each end of the socket is opened up. It is a pretty basic mechanism and the easiest way to do is to press the clip outwards.

Pick up your ram and line it up with the RAM and push down. Don't be afraid of applying a little pressure; just make sure it is even and consistent. Once your RAM is firmly seated in its socket, snap the clips back into place and close up your computer's panel.

Hook everything back up and turn on your computer and enjoy the newly installed RAM!
