How to Install Residential Window Tint

One way to stay cool in the summer is to block some of the sun's rays coming in through your windows. Residential window tint creates a reflective surface that deflects some of the heat that enters the home and makes the air conditioner work harder to keep the home cool. The tinting serves a dual purpose by blocking excess heat and providing privacy and security for the home. Residents can see out but no one can see in. Tinting with a mirrored finish provides the most privacy and security for windows that may not have shades or blinds.The process of applying the tinting film is easy and makes a great weekend do-it-yourself project.

Prepare The Window for Tinting

Fill the spray bottle with 1 quart of water and a 1/4 teaspoon of baby shampoo. Replace the cap and shake to mix. The soapy water solution helps the film adhere to the window. The excess is removed by the squeegee during the smoothing process. This step makes it easy for the film to stick to the window and allow you to remove all the air bubbles that often causes the tinting to peel off later.

Measure The Window Film a Little Larger Than The Window Opening

Measure the window and using a utility knife, cut a sheet of film to fit the window opening. Measure 1 inch above the top of the window to get a good fit. The excess window film will be trimmed during the application. Roll the tinting film out on a flat surface and cut.

Clean each pane of glass to be tinted with a non-ammonia based cleaner. A solution of soapy water is used to clean the glass and remove any grease or film that may stick to the window.Rinse with plain water and air dry for 10 to 15 minutes. Use a small razor blade to scrape any paint or residue from windows. The glass needs to be smooth and free of any paint drips or putty spots.

Apply The Tinting To Clean Windows

Spray the window lightly with the soapy solution and apply the sheet of cut tinting film to the window. Smooth into corners and at the top and bottom. Trim the excess film with the utility knife.Spray with the solution again and use the squeegee to remove excess water and air bubbles. Wipe the newly tinted window with a damp rag to finish. Repeat the steps above on remaining windows and allow the windows to dry completely.

Homes with window tint use less energy and that means more money in your pocket.

Do not clean windows with window cleaner prior to applying window tint.
