How to Instill Healthy Habits in a Teenager

As most parents can tell you, it is not always easy to instill healthy habits in a teenager. Some teenagers just really have trouble with actually wanting to have healthy habits. There are many reasons for this. It is not always an easy task to have your teenager make good decisions. Here are parenting tips on how to instill healthy habits in a teenager:

Getting Enough Sleep
Most teenagers do not get enough sleep. It is important that a teenager get at least seven to eight hours of sleep each night. Most teenagers get less than this. For example, they may be out late partying, and not get home until the wee hours of the morning. Another example, is that they are busy texting their friends in the middle of the night. A good tip for instilling healthy habits in a teenager is to teach them that sleep is very important for their growing bodies. They need down time in order to recharge again for their busy lives.

Eating Healthy
Most teenagers are living their lives on the run. They are getting up early for school, having activities after school and even working part time jobs after school. Their life is hectic. This means they may not be getting the proper nutrition that they need in order to be healthy. Help your teenager to slow down, and take time for proper nutritious meals. For examples, have a family sit down dinner that is healthy, and take the time to question your teenager on what meals they have eaten during the day. Provide easy, quick-to-eat healthy choices for them so that they can just grab it and go.

Weight
Weight is usually a big deal for teenagers. They might be trying to lose weight for appearances. They could also be doing the opposite by trying to gain weight for sports. As a parent, you need to keep an eye on what your teenager is doing to gain or lose weight. Severe teen weight loss is scary, and it needs special attention. Try to instill healthy weight habits. Extremes in either weight gain or weight loss is not a good thing, and teenagers need to understand what a good balance of weight should be for them.

Hygiene
Not every teenager understands the importance of good hygiene for their teen health. They might wear clothes that have been lying around their room for days on the dirty floor. Trying to make them take a shower every day might be a real challenge. Make sure that teenagers have the cleaning supplies that they like to brush their teeth, wear deodorant, wear clean clothes and hair supplies. If your teen likes his or her hygiene products, your teen is more likely to use them. Remind teenagers how important body hygiene is for their health and for those people who have to be around them.

Activities
One of the things for a teenager's guide to better health is to understand what kinds of activities your teenager does on their free time. Having too much free time may lead to dangerous situations like drinking and drugs. Make sure that they are not always glued to their TV, Ipod and phone. Try to get them to go outdoors and do some healthy activities like playing sports.
