The process of reclaiming consumer power begins with knowledge, and in 2009 consumers across the nation will travel down the information highway in increasing numbers as they seek to make wise spending choices and help to build a healthier environment. With cyberspace being such a vast entity however, many consumers may wonder where exactly to begin.
There are three fundamental ways in which consumers can use the Internet to reclaim their power in 2009:
1. Make informed decisions about spending. A little research goes a long way in reclaiming consumer power. This is where the Internet becomes a vital tool. Before making a purchase, focus not just on getting the biggest bang for the buck, but also on the safety and efficiency of a product. More than ever before, it is necessary to do one's homework by visiting websites such as Consumer Affairs.Com, Consumer Reports.Org, FDA.Gov, Recalls.Gov and Associated Content to gather the latest product information, ratings and reviews.
2. Help to improve the environment via online green shopping. Green has been identified as color of the future, and consumers can reclaim their power by purchasing environmentally-friendly products. This will help to change the nature and scope of businesses everywhere. According to Go-Green.Com, "green products" fall into five basic categories: 1) products for personal use, such as clothing and cosmetics, towels and bed linen; 2) products for the home, including household appliances and furniture; 3) electronics; 4) food and beverages; and 5) automobiles. Companies advertising such products are not difficult to locate on the Internet, but distinguishing between those that make false advertising claims and those that provide genuinely green products is critical. This is where online portals such as Ecomall.com and GreenChoices.Com become vital in helping consumers locate green products and the companies that sell them. For green product ratings, blogs and a chance to participate in community forums, Consumer Reports has a comprehensive website called GreenerChoices.Org.
3. Hold companies accountable. Consumers can also reclaim their power by raising the bar for companies that have settled for mediocrity or even subpar performance in areas such as customer service, efficiency and reliability. There's no reason to keep a bad experience bottled up when it is possible to file a complaint online with the Better Business Bureau or the Federal Trade Commission.
While this article does not provide an exhaustive list of online resources for consumers, it offers hope for a better future in which individuals will be able to make purchases with confidence through companies that they believe in and trust. Reclaiming consumer power will ultimately make the difference. And this can be achieved - one click at a time.

A great reminder that we should be responsible for our own spending and we have the power to do it right!
