Introducing a new kitten: Using scent and a kitten room
It's a good idea to try to introduce the kitten's scent to the older ones before you bring the kitten home. If you aren't able to get an item with the scent on it; the best thing to do is keep the kitten in a separate room for the first few days. Put food, water, toys, and a litter box in the room. Be sure to make the room kitten proof. Kittens can squeeze into smaller spaces and get stuck. Make sure there is nothing toxic he can eat or play with. The older cats will sniff under the door and slowly get accustom to the new one. After a day or so, let the kitten roam the rest of the house with supervision. While the kitten is introducing himself to his new home, leave the door to the room open. This way the older cats can inspect it.
Introducing a new kitten: Supervision is key
Even if your older cats get along, you still have to supervise when you are introducing the new kitten. It's normal for your older cats to hiss and swat at the kitten for the first few days or weeks. If the behavior turns too aggressive, it needs to be broken up quickly. It's important to watch if the kitten is bothering the older cats. He may pounce or bite in a playful manner. Aggression can arise if the older ones aren't in the mood to play and the kitten isn't taking the hint. The best thing to do is separate them and distract the kitten with a toy. Playing with the kitten often ensures that he will not constantly look for attention from the older cats.
The most important factor is being alert. Supervise every time they interact and play. Break up aggressive behavior. Don't be alarmed if there is hissing in the beginning. Don't scold the older cats if they get too rough. It's natural for them to be wary and defensive at first. Take things slow and make sure you give your older cats lots of love and attention. Do not try to force the older cats into interacting with the kitten. With supervision, let them become accustom to each other on their own terms.
