When they are comfortable sniffing the cup and getting a drink, find a plastic tub or bowl and fill the bottom with about 1 inch of water. Put something heavy in the middle of it, so it doesn't tip over when the rats jump on the edge and lean in.
After your rats get used to this it's time to raise one side of the plastic tub with a small book underneath so there is a deep end and a shallow end. This will allow your rats to get in and out comfortably. Next you will want to add some small things to the water to peak your rats curiosity.
Things To Add To The Water
Small pedals, smooth rocks, frozen peas, carrots or other frozen vegetables. Ice cubes are another thing that I have found rats love to play with in the water.
Your rats may not stay in the water for long when they jump in to explore what's in the water and this is completely natural. They may jump in just to grab a carrot and jump right back out with it. It may take a few days for your rats to get completely comfortable staying in the water and playing with the different things you put in there for them.
When To Add More Water
When it looks like your rats are getting more comfortable, it's time to add a little more water to the tub and a ladder so they can have something to climb on. Rats love to climb and will love the ladder and it will give them something to stand on while they get used to the deeper water.
You will want to add about an inch of water at a time, slowly so your rats get used to it and wait at least a few days in between adding more water. If it looks like your rats are getting uncomfortable, take out some of the water and don't add anymore.
Most rats like to swim if given the chance, but it has to be their choice, if you place your rat into the water they will jump right out. Never make your rat do something they don't want to do, let them explore the water in their own time.
