How to Introduce a New Puppy to Your Pets

Ways to Make the Transition Smooth

Adding a new furry family member to an already established group of pets can be a bit tricky. The current pets may feel jealous, threatened, or even lash out at the new member.

However introducing a new pet doesn't have to wreak havoc on a home nor does it have to alienate the current pets. Here are some practical steps on how to introduce a new puppy to your pets.

Determination

Before a family even selects a new puppy they need to determine if their home will be able to accommodate a new member. Considering the size, breed, and temperament of the animal are just a few things that need to be discussed even before a purchase is made. If these things are talked about ahead of time it will prevent a family from having to surrender the pet to the humane society.

Preparation

Once everything is discussed, a pet is chosen, and ready to be taken home owners will have to start taking some preliminary steps to make the transition as easy as possible.

Because they are used to being the only pets in the house it's imperative that they know that they aren't being replaced or forgotten. Giving extra attention, treats, and alone time with the current pets will build their confidence and self esteem which will make it easier to introduce the new puppy.

Pre-introduction

Before driving home with the new puppy owners should place a blanket or toy of some sort inside its kennel so that its scent can be transferred onto it. This will provide an opportunity to the current pets to smell the new puppy prior to meeting him face to face.

Introduction

Before the puppy is taken into the home the blanket or toy that was in the kennel should be removed. Owners can take the item into the house for the other pets to smell; allowing 15 minutes so they can get used to the scent.

After the 15 minutes is up the puppy (inside his kennel) can be taken into the room where the other pets are. Owners should not allow the puppy to come out of its kennel; the pets need an opportunity to look him over.

After all of the pets have spent some time sizing each other up the puppy can be released from its kennel and allowed to interact with the others. Note: close supervision is necessary to make sure that none of the pets get hurt.

Time

Over a period of time all of the pets will get used to each other and hopefully live in harmony but it takes attention and extra love from the owners to make the transition a success. Individual time should be spent with not only the puppy but with all of the pets so that they will not feel threatened.

Although there are several other ways to introduce a new puppy to other pets this acts as a starting guide and will hopefully make the transition easier.
