The whole idea behind a board game takes an existing idea and transfers it into the realm of board and imagination. It has to be unique enough to differ from preexisting board games but cool enough to differentiate itself from others. Difficulty is a main concern when inventing a unique board game. If a game concept is to complex or takes too long to complete, then is comfortable than it will need some tweaking.
When thinking of a game concept remember that all games are based around scarcity. In soccer the two teams are vying for one ball. In monopoly there are only so many spaces of real estate for the players to collect. There are other types of games, of course, but if you are racking your head to come up with an idea you will probably want to base you're thinking around a scarcity model of play.
Once you have your game thought of it is time to turn your attention to the amount of players that should play. You should be able to decide the minimum number of players and the maximum numbers of players that are allowed in on a single game session. Remember that your game will need to be adaptable to a different numbers of players. Meaning that the game should be just as fun as whether you play it with the minimum or maximum amount of people allotted. It will take many a play through to be able to get this just right and takes a special kind of person to be able to make the correct balance. Going back to the scarcity model of game play mentioned above, you could see how if there were too few resources to be collected for a large amount of players then it will be uninteresting. How monopoly worked its away around this problem is by dishing out the same amount of money for each player at the beginning of the game this allows the amount of players to scale very well.
