You can start by deciding what will be you first acquisition as a classic car, learn everything you can about that car, start by learning the numbers, know the vin code; the rpo code; the casting numbers; paint codes, and all of the other numbers on the car.
Learn how they all work together to tell you a story about the car, if you don't want to learn these things, you can hire an appraiser to do it for you, but if it were me this is not the route that I would take, I would learn each car inside and out every nut and bolt.
You can never go wrong when you arm yourself with knowledge, you should also listen to other people who may know a little more then you about the classic cars, don't be offended if they bring to light some little fact about a certain car that you need to know.
When you decide to invest in classic cars, there will always be a person out there who knows something that you don't, you should always be ready to learn a new fact about your cars, always make sure that you check out the validity of that facts that people tell you.
You don't want to get caught with your pants down so to speak, the more you can know, and the more you can learn the better off you'll be, no body can know it all, that is just quite simply impossible, things change all the time, there are always new things to learn.
I'm and expert on classic muscle cars, that is where I continue my studies, I plan to have a stable of them one day, starting with a 1969 camaro and working my way through all of my favorites, I love them and that is what you need to do to collect them.
You can't just be the cold collector that just does it for the money, you need to either have, or develop a love for the classic cars, if you develop a passion for them, it will spur you on to learn more and more about them, as you learn your passion will grow, along with the fun.
You can't know to much about these cars, there are people out there who are there just to run scams, and that way that you protect yourself is to know the car that your buying, this way you'll never purchase a cloned car thinking it's the real thing.
Clones can fool anybody, even the most knowledgeable of us, but the numbers will never lie, if you know the numbers nobody will ever sell you a car that you don't want, you should buy the by the numbers series of books, they are great.
My goal as always is to promote classic cars, and the buying and restoration of them, in that if I can help you to feel like you know about them, you'll have a lot of fun when you do decide to buy one, you won't get ripped off, and you'll be proud that you bought the car, that is my goal here.
